Hakkinen refuses to accept defeat and help team

McLaren will not follow Ferrari's lead and order Mika Hakkinen to support Formula One team-mate David Coulthard. Schumacher finished second after Ferrari team-mate Rubens Barrichello followed team orders and allowed Schumacher to pass him, just metres before the chequered flag. A spokesman for McLaren said that team orders would ultimately work against the sport.

Even though Hakkinen is a massive 34 points behind, the Finn refuses to give up until he is mathematically out of contention. "It is getting tougher and tougher for me," admitted the twice former champion. "But until I have not got the possibility of the championship, then I am not giving anything up," he said.

Coulthard moved within four points of Schumacher with eleven races left, following his unexpected victory in yesterday's Austrian Grand Prix. Team chief Ron Dennis confirmed that McLaren will not consider ordering Hakkinen to aid Coulthard until later in the season.
