Formula One: Irvine crashes on first outing in new Jaguar

Eddie Irvine escaped unhurt after crashing during his first test run in Jaguar's new R2 Formula One car today. The Northern Irishman's car careered off the track at the last high-speed corner of Valencia's Ricardo Tormo circuit, travelled across a gravel trap and hit a tyre wall. The front end was badly damaged and the car was being taken from Spain to the team's factory in Britain.

"Eddie was familiarising himself with the new car when he crashed," said a team spokesman. "It was nothing to do with driver error."

Jaguar now have just one R1B test car remaining at Valencia, which Irvine will conduct Michelin tyre tests in. His team-mate Brazilian Luciano Burti will not test until next week when Jaguar are at Silverstone and Barcelona.
