Formula 1: Schumacher recovering after operation

Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher is today recovering after undergoing surgery in a Geneva clinic to remove a pin inserted in his right leg after crashing during the British Grand Prix in July 1999.

Three-time world champion Schumacher suffered a double fracture when his car lost control round a bend at Silverstone, slamming into a tyre crash barrier, and underwent months of physiotherapy. The 31-year-old German, who drives for Ferrari, was forced to pull out of last season's final six races. Arch-rival Mika Hakkinen of Finland went on to win the title for McLaren.

But Schumacher came back with a vengeance this year to win the double drivers and constructors title for Ferrari, for the first time in 21 years, last month. (PA)
