Michael Schumacher put in another blistering performance to take poll position for tomorrows Italian Grand Prix at Monza. Schumacher got out early in today’s qualifying, and took the poll position from his team mate at Ferrari, Rubens Barrichello. Barrichello and Schumacher delighted the partisan Monza crowd by swapping the lead between them, and keeping Championship rivals McLaren off the front row.
Barrichello finished just .027 seconds slower then Schumacher, with Mika Hakkinen in third, .197 seconds off Schumacher’s time. BAR’s Jacque Villeneuve had his best qualifying session of the season and finished fourth, ahead of David Coulthard in fifth and Jordan’s Jarno Trulli back in sixth.
The other Jordan of Heinz Harald Frentzen finished in eighth position, despite having a series of problems with the car.
