Motorcycling: Olivier Jacque wins German Grand Prix

France's Olivier Jacque won the German 250cc motorcycling Grand Prix in Sachsenring on Sunday to extend his lead in the championship. The Yamaha rider came in ahead of the Japanese duo Tohru Ukawa, on a Honda, and his Yamaha teammate Shinya Nakano.

This was Jacque's second win of the season and it puts him on 185 points in the title race, 16 up on Nakano with half a dozen legs remaining. The Frenchman started from pole and was never headed throughout the 30 laps, crossing the line over 11sec up on Ukawa.

'I was keen to get a quick start to increase my advantage. I was happy with my rhythm, with my confidence, and the bike was extra quick today', he said. Jacque, who took the Spanish leg last month and filled the runner-up spot in the British race at Donington Park a fortnight ago, was registering his sixth career win.

Meanwhile, Brazil's Alex Barros continued his return to form when he powered his Honda to a memorable victory in the German 500cc event. Barros, who had ended a seven-year drought by lifting the Dutch Grand Prix at Assen last month, emerged triumphant after a fierce four-cornered battle to beat another Honda rider, Valentino Rossi, with championship leader Kenny Roberts Jnr., riding a Suzuki, third.
