Mika Hakkinen (McLaren) claimed pole position for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza after the last qualifying session this afternoon. But the Finn was pushed all the way by Jordan’s Heinz-Harald Frentzen who split the McLarens with David Coulthard forced into third place. Alex Zanardi was fourth in front of his teammate, Ralph Schumacher. The Ferrari of Mikka Salo was 6th while it was disaster for Eddie Irvine who could only manage 8th. Damon Hill was another place down in 9th.
