Conor McGregor has been announced as the main event for UFC 205 in New York where he will fight Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight title.

Dublin man McGregor will go to 155 pounds to challenge champion Alvarez at Madison Square Garden on 12 November.

The 28-year-old will retain the featherweight title he won with a knock-out against Jose Aldo in 2015 and so has the chance to become the first-ever simultaneous two-weight world champion in UFC history.

Philadelphia’s Alvarez knocked out Rafael dos Anjos at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in July to claim the lightweight crown.

Meanwhile, McGregor got his revenge at welterweight over Nate Diaz when securing a five-round victory at UFC 202 at the T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas in August.

UFC president Dana White told ESPN: "This is the fight the fans wanted, and I'm excited that our very first event at Madison Square Garden will be headlined by Eddie Alvarez defending the lightweight title against Conor McGregor."
