Conor McGregor has ignited speculation over his UFC future by announcing on Twitter that he has "decided to retire young".

It is not known how serious the 27-year-old was being or what date he had in mind as he added "Thanks for the cheese. Catch ya's later".

McGregor's management said that they had no knowledge of the tweet while his coach John Kavanagh added fuel to the fire by tweeting "Was fun while it lasted".

The Featherweight champion is in training for his welterweight rematch with Nate Diaz, the only man to beat him in a UFC bout, on July 9 in Las Vegas.

Only last Saturday, he tweeted that he was "hungry like Day 1" and posted a picture from a training camp in Iceland on Monday.

Diaz responded with humour, writing that he would also be retiring.

MMA journalist Ariel Helwan wrote: "Multiple sources are adamant at this time that McGregor's tweet isn't a joke, troll job or hoax of any kind. Reason(s) behind it is unclear."

McGregor attended the fight at Dublin's National Stadium 10 days ago that resulted in Joao Carvalho's death and shared his grief following the Portuguese man's passing.
