Sport Ireland CEO John Treacy says that Mixed Martial Arts has "no place" in the country unless the sport implements rules and guidelines that his organisation are going to bring forward.
He said that Sport Ireland will meet this week with Department officials to produce regulatory guidelines for the sport in light of the death of Portuguese fighter Joao Carvalho in Dublin earlier this week.
"The sport is an extreme element of sport so there are dangers there," he told RTÉ Radio 1's Morning Ireland. "This is something that needs to be looked at closely and we need to look at what they have in place and examine it.
"If we bring forward guidelines and codes of practice and they are not followed then I think there is no place for it in Ireland, it's as simple as that."
Treacy added that the sport is "extreme and high risk" and lacked the structure of a national organising body.
He said the "high risk" sport needs to be examined carefully so that safety of fighters is "paramount".
