Galway reel in Wexford to set up Leinster final clash with Dubs

Galway recovered from a 13-point deficit to eventually overcome Wexford by eight in Sunday's sun-baked closing round Leinster SHC group encounter at Chadwicks Wexford Park.

The Westerners, eager to respond to their loss to Dublin, looked in bother for much of the opening period as Wexford goals from Jack O’Connor, Lee Chin (penalty) and Cillian Byrne blew open a 13-point margin after 24 minutes.

But Galway rallied to within six points at the break before the introduction of Conor Cooney for the second half sharpened their challenge, with Jason Rabbitte and Cooney (penalty) bagging decisive goals to ensure a fourth Leinster final spot for the maroon and whites in five years.

Galway will now chase their first provincial title since 2018 when seeking revenge against the Dubs.

Wexford were already out of the running before this fixture, but certainly indicated the true potential which had deserted them previously with a promising first-half showing.

The early exchanges were tight, as Lee Chin (free) and Kevin Foley responded to a brace of Tom Monaghan overs for Galway inside five minutes.

And Wexford midfielder Diarmuid O’Leary had gone close to goaling only for a sharp save by 'keeper Darach Fahy.

But the home-side soon began to pile on the hurt as Wexford added 2-6 without reply between the seventh and 18th minutes.

Cian Byrne earned Wexford their first taste of the lead, and Conor Hearne, defender Stephen Martin, Ross Banville and Foley tagged on points, before captain Jack O’Connor lashed to the net after a dashing burst and lay-off by Hearne.

And Galway were rocked further moments later when temporarily losing defender Joshua Ryan to a black-card after shipping a penalty to Lee Chin, which Chin rammed to the net on seventeen minutes (2-7 to 0-2).

Ross Banville made it a 12-point gap before Evan Niland ended a 15-minute Galway drought with a 19th-minute free.

Galway repaired some of the damage through Niland (two frees), Conor Whelan and Monaghan, while Jason Rabbitte drew a save from Mark Fanning.

But Wexford rammed home their early supremacy when Cillian Byrne flashed to the net from a nifty Chin assist to blow open a 3-09 to 0-07 margin.

After being restored to 15 players, with the return of Joshua Ryan, the visitors rallied strongly in the closing stages to narrow the gap to 3-12 to 0-15 at the break.

Jason Rabbitte and free-taker Niland were to the fore with braces, as Tiernan Killeen, Monaghan, Gavin Lee and Ronan Glennon sought to rouse Micheál O’Donoghue’s charges.

They continued to respond positively on the restart as Conor Cooney (two frees) – a half-time replacement for Niland – and Darragh Neary clawed Galway back within four points after 40 minutes (3-13 to 0-18).

But a vital last-gasp deflection spared the Tribesmen shipping a fourth goal in response after Lee Chin wriggled through from a Conor Hearne set up.

And it took all of the Wexford ‘keeper’s attention to force a Tom Monaghan strike over the crossbar to maintain a narrow home lead after 47 minutes (3-14 to 0-20).

Rejuvenated Galway continued to prey, and they eventually regained parity when Jason Rabbitte stuck a 56th-minute goal from a Conor Whelan assist, before a hat-trick of Cooney points helped seize the initiative for the westerners (2-27 to 3-17).

Wexford were not helped when being left to finish a man down after goalie Mark Fanning was black-carded while initially preventing Galway sub Brian Concannon from netting.

And Cooney netted the resultant penalty passed Kevin Foley – who took over between the net – as Galway completed a perfect response to their early struggles.
