No Wexford captaincy role for Lee Chin for first time in a decade

Jack O'Connor is the new Wexford hurling captain with talisman Lee Chin not in a captaincy or vice-captain role for the Yellowbellies for the first time in a decade.

O’Connor continues his return to full fitness after a recent knee operation, and the St Martin’s man will have Damien Reck to call upon as vice-captain.

Manager Keith Rossiter said Reck will captain Wexford for the final two league outings in 1B with O'Connor expected to be ready for the start of the Leinster championship. Wexford open their provincial account away to newboys Kildare on 18 April.

O’Connor made his championship debut for Wexford in 2016, the last year in which Chin wasn’t captain or co-captain of his county.

Rossiter insists the appointments will do little to diminish the influence of the gifted 33-year-old, who led the Model County to their first Leinster title in 15 years in 2019.

"Lee is still a massive leader for us," he said. "He’s an inspirational figure and has been a tremendous captain.

"The leadership and performances that he has given over the past decade have been phenomenal and we look forward to many more days like that for Lee in the Wexford jersey."
