Former Dublin All-Star hurler Danny Sutcliffe has confirmed to RTÉ Sport that he is retiring from the inter-county game.

Now 33, the St Jude's clubman has decided to call time on his Dublin career after initially breaking through with the minors in 2008.

Sutcliffe made his senior debut for the Dubs in 2011 when, with nine minutes to go against Limerick in the 2011 All-Ireland quarter-final, then Dublin manager Anthony Daly gave the flying half-forward his championship chance.

A year on he had cemented his place in the team.

In 2013, he won an All-Star, becoming the first Dublin forward to gain such recognition in 23 years. That year, Sutcliffe played a pivotal role in Dublin's 12-point Leinster final win over Galway, which was their first provincial title in 52 years.

Ahead of the 2016 season, he took a break from the inter-county game to concentrate on his Master's studies.

In 2017, the former Dublin minor footballer played at wing-forward for New York against Sligo in the Connacht SFC.

A year later, he was back in the country and back on the Dublin hurling panel, and managed by Pat Gilroy.

Mattie Kenny took over after Gilroy and made him captain. One of the highlights of Kenny’s reign was Sutcliffe’s scintillating four-point haul against Kilkenny in Nowlan Park in 2019.

Sutcliffe didn’t feature much last season through injury but his loss to the team and Dublin hurling in general is a significant one.

As the 2026 squad takes shape, Neill Ó Ceallacháin has already cast his eye over 33 different players during pre-season.

Experienced performers like Fergal Whitely, Daire Gray, Paddy Doyle and John Hetherton are all expected back to the pitch in coming weeks.

But they will have to tackle the year ahead without the mercurial talents of Sutcliffe.
