Séamus Flanagan and Shane Dowling will not be part of the Limerick hurling squad for 2026, as manager John Kiely looks to freshen things up as the county looks to reclaim the All-Ireland title.
After Limerick's five-time All-Ireland-winning captain Declan Hannon called time on his career last week, the Irish Independent are reporting that other familiar names won't be around when the new campaign starts at the end of January.
Flanagan, who also has five Liam MacCarthy medals to his name, had limited game-time for the Shannonsiders in 2025. He was left off the panel for the league game against Tipperary after disciplinary action was taken by management following a striking incident on Cork defender Niall O'Leary.
"It was one moment in my career that I regret," Flanagan said subsequently on the BBC Social podcast, adding that "it was probably the start of my downfall for the season. Other players came in and done really well, and I maybe lost touch with management because of it.
"I wouldn't class myself as a dirty player, but it was a big regret for me."
Netminder Dowling has opted to step away after returning to the fold following Nickie Quaid's cruciate injury. He only saw action in the concluding Munster round-robin clash against Clare.
Jason Gillane, Micheál Houlihan, Fergal O'Connor and Cian Scully are others released from the panel.
