Patrick Horgan honoured to beat Eddie Keher record but priorities lie elsewhere

Cork attacking ace Patrick Horgan has said that his immediate focus is simply maintaining a starting spot in Pat Ryan's first 15 rather than individual records as he ticked off another notable milestone.

Horgan’s 10th-minute point in the 12-point win over Galway moved him past Kilkenny legend Eddie Keher as the top scorer in league history.

The player admitted it was "nice" to pass Keher’s 72-524 (740) tally – the Cork man is now on 26-673 (751) - but that those reflections will have to wait until he hangs up his boots.

"It’s hard to actually think about, it’s something when I stop playing I will probably say 'oh that’s a really nice thing to have.’

"But when you’re training every second night or whatever with the lads and you see how well everyone is going there in our panel, it’s hard not to concentrate on just trying to get your position."

The win secured a Division 1 final spot against Munster rivals Tipperary and four green flags means it’s 10 in their last two games having hit Clare for six last time out.

Cork fans have been left purring with what they have witnessed so far this season, and Rebel manager Ryan said that they have worked hard on their finishing in that area and hopes they can carry it into the Munster series.

"I think everyone is always trying to get after goals," Ryan told RTÉ Sport.

"Obviously we have very dangerous forwards inside, I think part of the reason we didn’t win the All-Ireland last year was because we weren’t clinical enough in that area. We’d great efficiency on points and stuff like that but our efficiency on goal-taking wasn’t good enough and we have worked very, very hard on that.

"Obviously league is different to championship, all our focus is really on 20 April (Munster SHC v Clare) and how we can get better for that day."

Cork named a very strong team for the clash at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh, but Ryan said they would have done likewise even if there wasn’t the carrot of a league final.

"You need to be getting your players ready and fellas needed game-time.

"It was great to get a couple of lads back onto the squad today, great to see Seamus (Harnedy) coming on there, Shane Kingston back, Alan Connolly – they're all vital players for us.

"Mark (Coleman) got 40 minutes, hadn’t played a game all year, that was Mark’s first game in 2025 so that was a huge bonus for us."
