Niall Ó Ceallacháin: Na Fianna's All-Ireland win 'super' for Dublin hurling

Niall Ó Ceallacháin hailed a great day for Dublin hurling after guiding Na Fianna to glory in the AIB All-Ireland Club Hurling final at Croke Park.

An impressive 2-23 to 0-20 victory over Sarsfields on Sunday saw Na Fianna claim senior national hurling honours for the first time, becoming just the second club from the capital to do so.

It was a day for new Dublin manager Ó Ceallacháin to savour as he reacted to the club's achievement on RTÉ's Sunday Sport.

"It's superb for the club. Our first Leinster, first All-Ireland, first of a lot of things, first county last year," he told Adrian Eames.

"It's super for Na Fianna, also super for Dublin. We know we can compete at any level and we will."

He added: "Just look around here, at the membership of Na Fianna, the kids, the families, everyone supporting our lads over so many years, that's culminated in a day like today, it means so much to a hell of a lot of people."

Ó Ceallacháin will now turn his focus fully to leading the Dublin senior hurlers as the Allianz Hurling League gets underway with Davy Fitzgerald's Antrim their first opponents next Saturday evening.

Balancing the club and inter-county commitments had kept him busy since his Dublin ratification, the 41-year-old admitted.

"It's been busy but as I've said before, it's not all about me, it's about the support teams that are there with both teams," he said.

"We'll enjoy this for a day or two. We're very much looking forward to (the Allianz League), there's a great bunch there that I'm looking forward to throwing all my lot in with them."

Much of Na Fianna's success on Sunday was built on a fast start, building a 10-point lead after 21 minutes when Tom Brennan got their first goal.

"We were targeting a fast start today," Ó Ceallacháin said.

"We didn't get off to a good start the last day, we targeted today. It's one thing targeting it, it's one thing doing it and I'm very proud of the lads how they performed.

"It was a very good team performance. I felt everyone knowing their role and just executing their role, supporting each other, having each other's back and that's what it's all about ultimately."

Despite the eventual nine-point margin between his side and Sarsfields, Ó Ceallacháin insisted that the match was not as comfortable as the scoreline may have suggested.

"It was a hard game. I know the score and we had that early lead but it was a hard game," he said.

"Sometimes we got on top in key periods. Sarsfields are a right good team, they have had a super year.

"It rolled for us there today but we know it could have been very different any other day."

Colin Currie celebrates a historic day for Na Fianna

For Colin Currie, who hit six points on the day from placed balls, it was a case of trying to take in the enormity of what the team had achieved.

"It's a lot of years of hard work all coming into one day so we're over the moon," he said on the same programme.

"The danger before the game was focusing too much on the occasion and not the match. It was the biggest thing we said all week, let's make sure we focus on the game of hurling that's in front of us.

"That's what we did and no we're reaping the benefits of that; it's going to be an unbelievable week."

On the Brennan, who hit two goals, Currie added: "That's Tom Brennan's first start of the season for us. He plays football. He came on to the scene at 18 and started for us in a championship final.

"He came back this year and I knew he'd do that today. He's an unbelievable lad and it's great to have him back again."
