Limerick have confirmed that Peter Casey suffered a broken ankle in their Munster SHC victory over Tipperary and will undergo surgery in the coming days.
Casey was badly injured in the act of scoring the All-Ireland champions' second goal in their 15-point win, the Na Piarsaigh forward frantically signalling his distress to the sideline and officials.
After being stretchered off, the 27-year-old was taken to University Hospital Limerick, with Limerick GAA confirming this afternoon that the player would require surgery, which will rule him out for the remainder of the inter-county season.
"Following a scan, we can confirm that Peter suffered a broken ankle which will require surgery in the coming days," Limerick GAA said in a statement this afternoon.
"Limerick county board/ senior hurling management team want to wish Peter all the best in his recovery and we will ensure that he will receive the best possible care over the coming weeks and beyond as he begins the journey to full recovery and resumption of his playing career."
In the statement, Limerick thanked their own medical team, the Tipperary medical team, the stadium medics, the staff at UHL and the Garda Siochana.
The injury cast a pall over an otherwise comfortable win for the All-Ireland champions in their second game in Munster, manager John Kiely saying that Casey had recovered from a serious injury before and they would give him "every chance to make a comeback at some point in the future."
Casey, a star man in last year's All-Ireland final and All-Star, ruptured his ACL in the course of an otherwise spectacular 2021 All-Ireland final performance and largely missed out on the 2022 campaign.

Former Limerick forward Niall Moran told 2FM's Game On that the awful injury made for a "surreal day" at the Gaelic Grounds.
"Obviously Limerick were very happy with a convincing win," said Moran.
"But I think everybody who left the Gaelic Grounds, from both sides, there was a bit of devastation in terms of Peter's injury.
"For a lot of people, the visibility of the injury...
"No different to every hurling person out there, I just hope he has a speedy recovery."
