Are Cork hurlers most in need of spring silverware boost?

Will 2024 finally be the year that Cork bring their national trophy famine to an end?
Will 2024 finally be the year that Cork bring their national trophy famine to an end?

Cork are the county that could most do with some spring silverware, a topic which was discussed on today's RTÉ GAA Podcast.

It's been 26 years since their last Allianz League title, and 19 years since Liam MacCarthy last wintered by the banks of the Lee.

While Cork have won Munster titles more recently - including three in the last decade - their national title drought has continued on as they look to feed their back-to-back U20 All-Ireland title winning stars of 2020 and 2021 into the senior ranks.

For nine-time All-Ireland winner Jackie Tyrrell it's a case of Cork producing plenty of talented players, but not with enough different characteristics.

"If you look at the volume of players they have coming through, with the underage success they've had, the question for me would be around having loads of a similar type of player.

"Take Tommy O'Connell, a really good hurler, but they have eight or nine 5ft10 guys, really dynamic, good on the ball.

"Out of all those lads have they a Cathal O'Neill? A leggy, 6ft1, dynamic guy who can break into the Limerick squad - an X-Factor type of player.

"It's looking at that pool and trying to extract something different for this Cork team that they've been missing the last couple of years. That'll probably only fall out in the league when Pat Ryan exposes them to these games.

"Also, there's a lot of players like Seamus Harnedy, Conor Lehane, Patrick Horgan that are at an older demographic and - this is going to sounds harsh - haven't got it job done at this point.

"How many of them do you go back with? They play Limerick in the [Munster] round robin. Limerick have eat up Conor Lehane year in, year out.

"Patrick Horgan has probably got a bit of success out of them, Seamus Harnedy here and there. If you're going to back to Limerick with them, those lads are going to be rubbing their hands together.

"If you threw in a Brian Hayes out of nowhere, someone new, someone they're not used to playing. It's getting the mix right between both [types of players]."
