Wicklow have appointed Jonathan 'Bosco' O'Neill as their new manager six days out from their Allianz Hurling League Division 2B opener with Donegal.

The Garden County were left reeling following the departure of Casey O'Brien and his management team last week.

The side endured a difficult January as they opened their Kehoe Cup with a 4-27 to 0-06 loss to Kildare before withdrawing ahead of scheduled games against Meath and Down. Player unavailability was understood to be a key factor in the decision.

Wicklow have moved fast with the county's former under-20 boss stepping into the role for the remainder of the season.

O'Neill claimed an All-Ireland U20 B title in 2015 as his side defeated Meath at Seple Stadium.

He also had a long career playing with the county and in 2018, at the age of 43, he played a Kehoe Cup match with his son, Jonathan.

"Wicklow GAA thanks Casey O'Brien and his selectors, Leighton Glynn, Graham Keogh, and Billy Cuddihy, for their efforts and wish them success in the future," the county said when announcing the new appointment.
