And so for the third year running a player from Patrickswell has been named PwC GAA/GPA Hurler of the Year.

Aaron Gillane's name is now on the roll of honour, following on from Cian Lynch and Diarmaid Byrnes, with Lynch also being honoured in 2018.

Gillane is also on the All-Stars team for 2023, one of seven Limerick players on the XV.

Speaking after an evening of double success at the RDS in Dublin, where this year's awards were handed out, the 27-year-old was quick to pay tribute to his own club.

"Patrickswell in size is a small club but definitely not in tradition and history," he told RTÉ Sport.

"With Cian and Diarmaid who have gone before me, it's an honour to follow them. I have been best friends with both since we were knee high. To be able to do this with them and go on this journey with them, and then bring positivity and good memories from Patrickswell means a lot to us.

The 'Well has produced names like the Enrights, Foleys, Benniss, Punchs, who have starred for club and county. Gillane paid tribute to them and hopes the next generation can now look up to other names.

"All of those lads are still legends in our eyes," he added.

"We are normal lads who get on with life as best we can, try and enjoy our hurling. It's mad to think there are youing boys and girls looking up to us and hopefully we can be good role models for them. You never know you might see one of them up here in a couple of years."

As for his comrades in battle in the green and white of Limerick, with the side going for five All-Irelands in 2024, the inside forward highlighted a strong bond that has always existed.

"We always knew the group was special. The best thing about the last couple of years is the amount of time we get to spend together; we're all best friends on and off the field. To be able to experience it all with your best friends is special.

"I always say if you're willing to put in the work you will get the rewards. That's our motto."
