'Skin and hair' set to fly when Cork and Tipperary do battle

Cork manager Pat Ryan and his Tipperary counterpart Liam Cahill are anticipating a Saturday night thriller when the two sides clash at Páirc Ui Chaoimh in the round-robin phase of the Munster SHC.

The Rebels head Tipperary on points difference in the standings after inflicting a clinical 0-27 to 0-18 defeat on Waterford at the same venue last Sunday.

Each of Cork's players in the front eight registered points from play to devastate a Déise side propping up the table after two defeats.

"It makes life a bit easier when you get a win under the belt and we have a bit of momentum going into the Tipperary game on Saturday night," Ryan, who won two Munster crowns and an All-Ireland title as a player, told RTÉ Sport.

"It is a huge game. They had a fantastic win against Clare.

"We have two home games and we have to get the most value out of them that we can.

"We know Tipperary will be coming down well prepared, with Liam Cahill and Mikey Beavins and the lads they have involved. So we need to be well prepared for them.

"It's a huge rivalry, Cork and Tipperary, real traditional fare. I assume it will be a huge crowd.

"There will be skin and hair flying below in Páirc Ui Chaoimh. We need to be able to take on the challenge Tipperary will bring to us."

Cork fielded a blend of youth and experience in their win over Waterford, with full debutant Brian Roche scooping the man of the match award, while a number of more established players made pleasing returns from the sidelines.

"We had a good few injuries during the league, that’s well documented," Ryan added.

"But one lucky part was there were a lot of more experienced fellas.

"They knew what championship was about and once we got them back to full health, they would get up to speed way quicker than a new fella would.

"I’m delighted with what they’re bringing to us and the strength of the panel we have at the moment."

A week on from their own impressive 5-22 to 3-23 Munster win against Clare, Tipperary watched Cork dismiss Waterford from the comfort of their armchairs, with the Premier County boss aware of the task that lies ahead of his team.

"Another massive game in a Munster Championship that is so unforgiving," is how Cahill assessed the match-up.

"If you can’t win your matches, you just don’t know what it will throw up.

"A massive task again for us to go to Páirc Ui Chaoimh to a Cork team that are out of the traps early and seem to be flying.

"Down there at their home ground, it’s going to be a big big ask for us but one we’re really looking forward to."
