Mayo 0-21 Derry 1-16
Mayo were forced to dig deep to see of a strong Derry fightback in a two-point victory over the Leaf County in Castlebar.
Mayo, aided by a stiff breeze, made the running in the first half to lead by double scores at the interval 0-10 to 0-05, where team captain Keith Higgins lined out at number 14.
A Cormac O'Doherty free was Derry's third score on the bounce after the resumption before Mayo found their groove to build up a fine lead.
Niall Ferris on the hour mark cut Mayo’s lead to four points, while a Brian Cassidy made it a one score game.
In the third minute of injury time, Derry had reduced the arrears to the bare minimum, but the hosts claimed the final score of the game to win out 0-21 to 1-16.
Donegal 1-13 Roscommon 1-11
Donegal opened their account with a win over Roscommon in Letterkenny where later points from Niall Cleary and Declan Coulter ensured a winning start in 2B.
A Cathal Dolan penalty put Roscommon ahead 1-03 to 0-04, but it was a Donegal penalty that was the last action of the half.
Coulter drilled his effort wide as the home side trailed 1-07 to 0-07 at the break.
Coulter was a key figure throughout, and his seventh point brought Donegal to within a point with a quarter of an hour remaining, with Cleary and Coulter efforts steering them to victory in Letterkenny.
