Galway goalkeeper James Skehill has announced his retirement from inter-county hurling at the age of 32.

The Cappataggle man made his senior in 2007 and bows out with three Leinster titles and two National League crowns to go with a coveted All-Ireland medal from 2017 where he was understudy to Colm Callanan.

Skehill also played in the All-Ireland final defeats of 2012 and 2018

"After 14 years playing with Galway, I'd like to announce my retirement from inter-county hurling," he said.

"A huge thank you to my wife Grace, my family, friends and teammates who supported me over the years. It was a huge honour to play for my county. Thank you." he tweeted on Wednesday evening.

Galway manager Shane O’Neill praised an "outstanding" goalkeeper for his "magnificent effort" in 2020 where the Tribesmen fell to Limerick at the penultimate stage.

"He showed true selflessness in imparting his knowledge to the younger goalkeepers of the group whilst providing intense competition throughout," he said.
