Ger ‘Sparrow’ O’Loughlin has hailed his Kilmallock side’s hunger in beating hot favourites Na Piarsaigh to take the Limerick SHC title.

Speaking to RTÉ Sport about the 1-15 to 0-14 victory after the game, O’Loughlin said: “It definitely rates up there in the top drawer, because nobody gave Kilmallock a chance today.

“Na Piarsaigh were justifiably 4/9 on, and I think, to be fair to them they showed all the great characters they have and all the great traits they have during the group stage. We knew today it would come down to a battle.

“The conditions changed in the last couple of nights, and when we had a puck-about on Friday, we said, ‘Look, these are going to be the conditions next Sunday so we’re going to have meet fire with fire’.

“I thought, if we were out there until seven o’clock this evening we’d have still scraped home by a point or two.”

O’Loughlin spoke about Kilmallock’s desire, saying that he had tried to instil in his players the idea that “you’ll get nothing soft”.

“Their inconsistency had to be addressed, and I think, to be fair to them, it was brought out today.

"They’re great characters. It’s a case of bringing it out and not letting them go back into a shells.”
