Liam Rushe has revealed the Dublin players were involved in the selection of Ger Cunningham as the county’s new senior hurling manager.

Anthony Daly stepped aside after six seasons in charge, with former Cork star Cunningham taking over earlier this month, and Rushe admitted, “they consulted with us every step of the way.”

Speaking on www.gaa.ie, Rushe said he and his team-mates were wary of the situation in Cork in the 2000s when player strikes arose out of dissatisfaction with decisions over team management.

Rushe said: “I think everybody was taking a line from the Cork strike team. There’s no point having somebody foisted upon you by the county board.

“In fairness to them, they consulted with us every step of the way. We had three lads just liaising with them to hear what they had, who they were interviewing, and what was going on.”

Cunningham makes the step up to inter-county management following stints as coach and selector with the Rebels and Rushe is happy to have someone of his experience on board.

Cunningham also won three All-Irelands and seven Munster crowns between the sticks for Cork, while he was also a four-time All Star.

Rushe added: “I suppose Ger has a lot of experience. He’s been a selector in a few regimes, he’s won All-Irelands, Hurler of the Year, so I think he has the necessary experience.

“I suppose it was about time he got a shot at a county job and we’re happy enough it was Dublin.

“Anyone who followed Anthony was going to need a fair profile really, weren't they?" added Rushe.

"They were probably going to pale in comparison. If not a step up, he’s certainly on a level peg. He has won it all, he’s been there and won it all before.”
