Joe Canning says Galway will focus on their own game, not stop Kilkenny playing

Galway talisman Joe Canning insists that his side are concentrating on their own game instead of Kilkenny ahead next month's All-Ireland final.

The Cats booked their place in the final with a convincing semi-final victory over Tipperary and many commentators claimed that Tipp played into Kilkenny’s hands by trying to stop them playing.

Many felt that Lar Corbett, one of Tipperary’s most important players, was wasted as he was assigned a role of following Kilkenny defender Tommy Walsh around the pitch in a bid to nullify him.

Canning does not believe that Galway will seek to emulate such tactics and will instead just focus on the fundamentals of their game that have already seen them beat Kilkenny once this season.

"They have so many players - that they didn't even bring off the subs' bench - that you can't try and take them out of the game. You have to do your own thing and, hopefully, that will work,” Canning told the Irish Daily Star.

"We'll have our tactics and they'll have theirs and I don't think it's going to change much from any other game. Obviously, they'll want to implement theirs on us, and likewise with ours on them. It's whatever team gets the breaks then and the bit of luck that will win.

"But this thing about trying to counteract Kilkenny, I don't believe in it. We have to concentrate on ourselves. Bring our style of play to the game and hopefully that will be good enough.

"That's all we're concentrating on. The Leinster final is over and done with and we've forgotten about it.

"We can't be worried about what other teams are going to do. There's a thing all year that we do our work on the training field and we'll see how it goes on the day of matches."
