Cork produced a fine comeback performance to defeat All-Ireland champions Kilkenny at a sunny Páirc Uí Chaoimh on a scoreline of 1-17 to 1-15.

The Cats, thanks to a 30th minute Richie Power penalty, led 1-10 to 1-08 at the interval, with the Cork goal coming from Paudie O'Sullivan.

But with a fine brand of hurling the home side, with eight points from Pat Horgan, fought back to win.

The visitors had Power, who finished with 1-11, sent off in the final minute.

Cork went into the match on the back of a home defeat to Galway the previous Sunday, when they lost a five-point half-time lead.

They showed three changes from that set back, with Stephen McDonnell returning to full-back after recovering from a toe injury.

Eoin Cadogan, who had played with the footballers against Kerry, lined out this week with the hurlers at centre-back, with teenager Darren Sweetman coming in at midfield.

Damien Cahalane,Tom Kenny and John Gardiner were left out and were part of the substitutes panel.

The home side started brightly with the first of Pat Horgan's seven successful frees inside the first minute.

But the experienced visitors, with the wind at their backs, came very much into the game, thanks mainly to the accuracy of centre-forward Richie Power from placed balls.

Kilkenny had a 100 per cent record after wins over Tipperary, Waterford and a late Matt Ruth goal helped them defeat Dublin in an 11-goal thriller last weekend.

Brian Cody's side built up a 0-06 to 0-02 advantage after 12 minutes, but Cork showed they meant business, with Cathal Naughton, from play, and a William Egan '65 helping Horgan on the scoresheet.

There was a point between two well-matched sides, when Power belted home a penalty after half an hour, but the home side responded immediately.

A Lorcan McLoughlin delivery was struck to the net by Cork full-forward Paudie O'Sullivan, and the sides went in with Kilkenny ahead 1-10 to 1-08 at the break.

In the second half, with the wind at their backs and showing some fine team play as well as good stick work, Cork put over four unanswered points in a ten-minute spell to lead for the first time since the opening seconds.

With Conor Lehane, Jamie Coughlan and Pa Cronin adding their name to the scoresheet.

Then, with the sides level ,marksman Horgan put over two late frees to clinch a Cork victory, before Kilkenny had their top scorer, Richie Power, sent off for a wild pull in stoppage time.
