A brilliant scoring performance from Galway centre forward Niall Burke, who ended with 1-10, helped his side to a comeback victory over Cork at Pairc Ui Chaoimh.
The visitors trailed 1-9 to 0-7 at the break, with Cathal Naughton belting home the Cork goal on 28 minutes. A goal from Damien Hayes edged Galway ahead in the 52nd minute, but within seconds a Lorcan McLoughlin ground shot had the Leesiders back in front.
However, Niall Burke landed six points from frees before he sent a brilliant shot past Donal Òg Cusack in the last minute to give his side a fine away win.
It was a first defeat for Jimmy Barry Murphy in his second spell in charge of the Cork side.
The game was played on a bright sunny afternoon, with a near perfect sod for hurling, on the first game of the double header at the venue.
The Rebel County had two victories on the board before this encounter, having defeated Waterford at home under lights and winning in Croke Park last week against Dublin.
Cork coach Jimmy Barry Murphy made four changes from the win in the capital. With star forward Ben O'Connor retiring, defender Stephen O'Donnell injured, Eoin Cadogan playing for the footballers against Kerry and Ross Cashman on the bench.
In came Damien Cahalane, a son of former star footballer Niall, at full back for a league debut. William Egan, Lorcan McLoughlin and Jamie Coughlan also started after playing in the recent Fitzgibbon Cup final.
Cork despite playing against the wind opened brightly and led 0-4 to no score after 13 minutes and they stretched their advantage to 0-7 to 0-2 by 27 minutes, thanks to five points from Pat Horgan.
Then came a well-worked Cork goal, as forwards Jamie Coughlan and Paudie O'Sullivan combined to set up Cathal Naughton, who powered the ball to the net to help his side to a 1-9 to 0-7 half time advantage.
Galway made two changes from the side that lost the previous week to Tipperary, Johnny Coen and Andy Smyth coming in at half back and midfield.
But with Niall Burke on top form from placed balls all afternoon, Galway were always in touch.
In the 52nd minute a clearance by the Cork goalkeeper was blocked, with Damien Hayes sweeping home the loose ball to give Galway the lead for the first time.
But within seconds the home side were back in front when Lorcan McLoughlin sent a low shot to James Skehill's net, and with an outstanding display of point taking from teenager Conor Lehane, Cork seemed to be heading for victory.
Andy Smith put over a couple of vital points for the men from the west and with the sides level, last year’s U21 player Niall Burke blasted a high shot to the Cork net in the last minute, before adding a stoppage time point to seal the victory.
