Anthony Cunningham has been named as the new Galway Senior Hurling team manager.

The announcement was made after a Galway Hurling Board meeting this evening, where the management team of Cunningham, along with Tom Helebert and Mattie Kenny, was confirmed.

The St Thomas’ clubman was a key member of the Galway side in the 1980s winning back to back senior titles in 1987 and 1988, alongside a league title and All-Ireland titles at Minor and Under-21 level.

Cunningham’s management career has been equally successful after guiding Roscommon football side St Brigid’s to three county successes and a Connacht title in 2006.

The Galway Under-21 side were next to benefit from Cunningham’s management as he led his side to the Under-21 Championship final in 2010 before landing the 2011 All-Ireland title, defeating Dublin in the final.

Cunningham is currently in charge of Westmeath side Garrycastle and is likely to remain in charge for the remainder of the AIB Club football championship.
