Speaking on Spórt an Luain on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta, former Cork hurling manager John Allen said that Jimmy Barry-Murphy’s appointment as new Cork hurling manager could herald the return of Seán Óg Ó hAilpín to the team.

Speaking to Gearóid Mac Donncha on Monday, Allen said that he would greatly welcome the imminent appointment, while also mentioning the legendary status that Barry-Murphy has within the county and the positive impact that this would bring.

He added that a lot would depend on the selectors chosen to work with him, mentioning Ger Cunningham and Seánie McGrath as possible members of the support team.

Allen, who coached Cork to All-Ireland glory in 2005 - a side that was captained Seán Óg Ó hAilpín - was also of the view that the new management ticket could see the latter back playing inter-county hurling and felt that it was a mistake for Denis Walsh to drop the player from the squad earlier this year.
