Derry gave away an early lead as they lost their second successive Allianz Hurling League Division 3A final.

Helped by the accuracy of free-taker Ruairi Convery, Derry built a 2-08 to 1-06 half-time lead at Pearse Park.

But Andy O’Brien netted as Wicklow responded strongly on the restart. The lead changed hands again, however, with Enan Glynn, Jonathan 'Bosco' O’Neill and O’Brien leading the way, Wicklow secured the title and Division 2 hurling for next year.

The Oak Leafers were keen to shake off the disappointment of last year's loss at this stage to Kerry, and began this game brightly.

The Ulster side were in impressive form early on with first half goals from Convery and Oisin Doherty moving them ahead on the scoreboard.

Derry completed their hat-trick courtesy of an own goal, but only after Wicklow made the better start to the second half.

Casey O'Brien's charges scored 1-03 without reply in the early stages of the second half, with Andy O'Brien slotting home their goal.

The sides were tied on three occasions midway through the half, before Derry's third goal gave them a 3-13 to 2-13 lead.

A brace of Glynn points and an O'Brien score tied the game at 2-16 to 3-13 with five minutes remaining. Wicklow continued to press hard with O'Neill in fine form from placed balls, before Derry offered a response.

But this was to be the Garden County's day as they held on for a famous victory - their fifth in six league games - and promotion to the second tier.
