Galway native Murt Connolly has been named as the new manager of the Mayo senior hurling team.

The Castlegar clubman, who claimed an All-Ireland club title in 1980 takes over from Westport native Martin Brennan, who was in charge for the past four seasons and guided the team to back-to-back Christy Ring Cup semi-finals in 2008 and 2009.

Connolly is an uncle of Mayo full-back and current captain Aiden Connolly.

The Mayo County Board have yet to appoint selectors, with Pete Finnerty stepping down after Mayo's exit from the Christy Ring Cup last Summer.

Mayo begin their 2011 campaign with a National League Division 3B opener against Roscommon on Sunday February 13.
