Galway manager John McIntyre admits that Sunday’s last gasp All-Ireland SHC quarter-final defeat to Waterford will haunt him for life.

Galway looked comfortable approaching the final whistle before conceding 1-03 in the final three minutes to exit this year’s Championship by 1-16 to 0-18.

Afterwards, McIntyre said: ‘Waterford finished in a blaze of glory. We gave them the opening and they took it.’

The Tribesman boss added ‘Any time you lose a match by a point it torments you for life.

‘I have lost many matches by a point and I am still only getting over a few of them. So now I have to start all over again.

‘It is much easier when you are beaten by nine or 10 points because there are no ifs, buts or maybes and no post-mortems, no inquests. You are just beaten by a better team.’

Opposite number Davy Fitzgerald felt his side have now answered their critics: 'We've received a lot of stick over the last year both as a management and as a team, and I think we answered that today.

'We fought hard, never gave up the ghost. Things went against us and we kept coming back, kept coming back, kept coming back.

'I'm just delighted Dan (Shanahan) came on and got a goal and a point. It's not been easy for him sitting on the sideline, but he came on and turned the match in the end.'
