Dublin almost pulled off a sensational Allianz NHL Division One win over Kilkenny but were pipped by two late Cats points at Nowlan Park.

A Kevin Flynn goal helped the Dubs lead 1-09 to 0-06 early on, but the Cats recovered to go in four points up at the break.

Two David O'Callaghan goals kept the Dubs in touch, but Eoin Larkin’s late major looked to secure the win for the hosts.

But it needed points from Larkin and Hogan to finally kill off the gallant Metropolitans.

Following Cork's 27-point loss at Nowlan Park a fortnight ago, one feared that the Dubs, who have enjoyed an excellent league campaign, would also be subjected to a hiding at the hands of the Cats.

But Dublin served notice of the intention to make a stand on Noreside when Flynn’s goal added to a David Treacy point to put Anthony Daly's charges 1-02 to 0-00 ahead.

Midfielder Joey Boland hit three points from play and free-taker David O'Callaghan matched that tally to leave the Dubs six points clear.

Kilkenny would not have expected to trail, and responded immediately by hitting seven of the next eight points, with Henry Shefflin, Hogan and TJ Reid leading the revival.

After weathering the storm the home side led 0-17 to 1-10 at the interval.

The sides shared six points at the start at the second half, but Dublin got back to within two when O'Callaghan struck the first of his two goals. The St Mark's clubman had another opportunity for a three-pointer moments later but he opted to take his point to leave just the minimum between the sides.

But O'Callaghan did find the net again to give the Dubs an unlikely 3-14 to 0-21 lead heading into the closing stages.

Larkin's goal then gave Kilkenny the narrowest of leads before a Dublin point from David Curtin put the teams on course to share the spoils.

But Brian Cody's Kilkenny had the last say with Larkin and Hogan splitting the posts to deny Dublin a memorable result.
