There was no repeat of last summer's saga in Thurles as an Eoin Kelly-inspired Tipperary side took league honours over Limerick.

The Shannonsiders fielded a largely experimental side and attacking ace Kelly went to town, scoring 1-12.

Limerick goalkeeper Dave Bulfin deflected a Kelly penalty over the crossbar and also denied Lar Corbett on four occasions.

Kelly's 26th-minute goal helped his side to a 1-10 to 0-06 half-time lead.

Two quick goals from Andrew O'Shaughnessy, the first from a penalty, cut the gap to seven points before substitute Seamus Callinan bagged Tipp's second goal.

Tipperary started with Diarmaid Fitzgerald in their half-back line, in place of thumb injury victim Eamonn Corcoran, while Limerick had Micky Cahill in at left corner-back instead of the injured Seamus Hickey.

Limerick manager Richie Bennis picked just three players from last year's All-Ireland final side but Tipp, encouraged by last week's triumph over Offaly, were predictably too strong and gained a revenge of sorts for losing last summer's unforgettable championship trilogy.

Kelly had his first sight of goal in the third-minute when Tipp won a penalty but Bulfin managed to beat the Mullinahone clubman's shot over the bar.

Kelly's influence grew as the first half wore on and an excellent point from the five-time All-Star opened up a 0-04 to 0-01 lead for the Premier County.

O'Shaughnessy and Hugh Flavin, who was influential in midfield, kept Limerick in touch before Kelly scored on the rebound after a Corbett point attempt had bounced back off the post.

Tipp moved ahead during the early stages of the second half, scoring five points without reply with Kelly again popping up with some excellent scores.

Limerick breathed some life into the game on the hour mark when, after points from James Woodlock and Kelly, a combination of Eamonn Buckley and Benny Dunne brought substitute Niall Moran down for a penalty.

O'Shaughnessy stepped up to beat veteran goalkeeper Brendan Cummins and just two minutes later, he repeated the trick from a 21-yard free.

The two-goal blast cut Tipp's advantage to 1-17 to 2-08 but Callinan's excellent strike, following a hand pass from Kelly, put the result beyond doubt.

The game ended on sour note and with both teams minus their full complement of players. Limerick had O'Shaughnessy sent-off for his second bookable offence: a reckless challenge on Woodlock that saw him connect with the Tipp man's leg.

Woodlock had to be stretchered off and with the home side having used all five substitutes, Liam Sheedy's charges played out the final minutes with 14 men.

Having also emptied their bench, Limerick had only 13 players on the field by the final whistle as Pat Tobin was sidelined with a late injury.
