John Mitchell's Wicklow hurlers held out for a 1-16 to 2-9 Kehoe Cup first round win over Carlow in blustery conditions at Bray.
It was a closely contested opening half with no more than three points separating the sides at any one time.
Fintan Donnelly, Shane McGrath and Eoin Mason performed strongly for the hosts.
Wicklow led by 0-10 to 0-7 at the interval and they built up a nine-point lead on the restart.
Goals from Patrick Walsh and Niall Kilcoyne helped get the students back into contention, but overall Wicklow were the better side and were cheered by a large home crowd.
Geoffrey Bermingham was amongst those who performed strongest in defence for Wicklow.
He also managed to get on the scoresheet to help the Garden county set up a meeting with Roscommon in the next round.
Meanwhile, Meath romped to a 2-27 to 1-5 Kehoe Cup quarter-final victory over Trinity College at Pairc Tailteann, Navan.
The hosts, under manager John Andrews, were firmly in control throughout this contest and led by 2-12 to 1-3 at half-time with Harry Goff scoring the students' goal.
Michael Hyland done his utmost to bring TCD back into contention in the second half, but the Royals continued to prosper and advanced to a semi-final meeting with either Wicklow or Roscommon.
