Ben Dorney has officially stepped down from his role as Kildare senior hurling manager.
Dorney revealed his decision at a meeting with the Kildare Hurling Board last night citing personal reasons for his departure.
The Cork native from Ballyhea served as Kildare manager for two years reaching the Christy Ring Cup semi-final in his first year and bowing out in the final this year.
Dorney is linked with the St Vincent’s club in Dublin and is also involved with the Dublin underage scene.
Hurling Board Chairman Jody Murphy wished Dorney well into the future and thanked him for his immense contribution to hurling in Kildare.
Under Dorney's management Kildare reached the final of the Christy Ring Cup for the first time in its history.
Murphy noted that the success of the county team under Dorney's stewardship had ‘created a real buzz around hurling in the county and had significantly raised the profile of the game which would serve as a positive influence on young hurlers into the future’.
Dorney expressed his thanks to the Board, his selectors and players and said he was satisfied that Kildare hurling was moving in the right direction and he was leaving behind a good setup and the nucleus of a team that would continue to challenge for honours in the next few years.
