Derry needed a late point from Ruairi Convery to see off Ulster Championship debutants Armagh in a hard-fought quarter-final at Casement Park.
An injury-time foul on Sean Leo McGoldrick gave Convery the chance to register his eighth free of the game and set up a Derry v Down semi-final.
Armagh showed their battling qualities to bounce back from conceding a fourth minute goal to Paddy McCloskey – they led 0-10 to 1-05 at half-time.
Declan Coulter was their leading light, scoring 0-06 in the first half and despite a further three points from their top marksman, Armagh were just edged out in a game during which the sides were level on nine occasions.
It was almost 60 years ago that Armagh last competed in the Ulster Championship, but Mattie Lennon's current crop did more than enough today to suggest that the Orchard County can compete at this level for years to come.
Convery started as he finished by sending a placed ball through the uprights and full-forward McCloskey muscled through in the fourth minute to find the Armagh net.
But Lennon's charges did well to level the tie by the 24th minute with notable scores from dual star Paul McCormack, who has forsaken his place in Joe Kernan's football squad, and the excellent Coulter.
Ryan Gaffney had managed to strike the levelling point for a 0-07 to 1-04 scoreline and Coulter kept Armagh ticking with the lead score just moments later.
Coulter, who was firing over scores from both sides of the field, was again on target before the break but it was a stunning long range point from corner forward Fiachra Bradley that particularly caught the eye.
Two points in front at the break, the underdogs were dreaming of a shock victory but Derry, who had the wind advantage for the second half, had other ideas.
The Oak Leafers, who last won the Ulster title in 2001, started well on the resumption with three successive points but Coulter kept his side in the hunt and the Cuchulainns clubman's final point of the afternoon, struck right on 70 minutes, looked like sending the game to a replay.
But Armagh's world crumbled in injury-time when corner back Philip Kirk saw red and Convery stepped up to plant the resulting free through the posts and book Derry's place in next Sunday's semi-final at Casement Park.
