Con Murphy, the former president of the GAA, has died. He was 84.

He won four All-Ireland senior hurling medals with Cork in the 1940s.

When Murphy retired from playing the game he took up refereeing and adjudicated the All-Ireland senior finals of 1948 and 1950.

In 1976, Murphy became President of the Gaelic Athletic Association.

During his three-year term as President he oversaw such developments as the official opening of the 50,000-seat Páirc Uí Chaoimh in Cork in 1976.

Con Murphy was also a former member of the RTÉ Authority, and was awarded the freedom of Cork in 1995.
