Kieran Murphy has been nominated by Erin's Own to captain the Cork county hurling side in 2007.

Murphy will now take over the captain’s role from Newtownshandrum’s Pat Mulcahy after the club meeting on Monday night decided to put his name forward.

It was widely believed that Erin’s Own would nominate goalkeeper Donal Og Cusack would get the captaincy after being recommended by veteran full forward Brian Corcoran who retired last month.

The nomination may cause problems for new Cork manager Gerald McCarthy as Murphy hasn’t been able to hold down a regular starting place on the team in recent seasons.

McCarthy is expected to meet with the Cork players for the first time on Thursday, where begin planning for the new season.
