Antrim finally secured the 2006 Ulster Hurling title in Boston on Sunday, defeating New York by 2-20 to 1-14.

The newly crowned Ulster hurling champions won't return with the silverware until next weekend, after the Saffron squad have wound up their celebrations in the USA.

A fifth successive provincial title was secured in the unfamiliar surroundings of Boston's Carton Field, finally bringing to an end a five-month saga which had threatened to scupper this year's competition.

New York, having shocked Derry in the semi-final, had their sights on another big scalp, but it was no surprise that they found themselves outclassed by the experienced Ulstermen.

Johnny McIntosh was the star of the show, his 1-7 tally destroying New York hopes in merciless fashion.

Antrim got their pacy attackers into the game right from the start, and it was clear from the moment that Johnny McIntosh got their opening point in the third minute, that this was going to be his day.

By the ninth minute, they were 0-4 to 0-1 ahead, with McIntosh hitting three, and setting up another for Paddy Richmond, who with a little more composure could have had a goal.

Kieran Bergin and accurate free striker Michael 'Bonnie' Kennedy kept the Exiles in touch, but they never recovered from Antrim's 13th minute goal, blasted home from an almost impossible angle.

Apart from the lively Kennedy and Kieran Bergin, New York offered little in terms of an attacking dimension, but some timely interventions from full-back Richie Gaule of Kilkenny and Offaly's Adrian Guinan prevented further damage at the other end.

McIntosh, however, continued to wreak havoc, and with James McKeague and Karl McKeegan solid at the heart of their defence, wave after wave of attack stretched the New Yorkers to the absolute limit.

The Saffrons were 1-10 to 0-5 ahead with 10 minutes of the half to play, with Conor Cunning, Martin Scullion and Brian McFall, with a delightful sideline cut, adding to their mounting tally.

New York did stage a minor revival, Kennedy steering over a string of long range frees, but another Saffron salvo saw McIntosh bring his first half tally to 1-6, and his side to a 1-14 to 0-9 interval lead.

But New York were right back in it three minutes after the restart when substitute Trevor Fletcher struck his first goal, running on to a Kevin Kennedy delivery to drive low to the net past DD Quinn.

And when Bonnie drilled home his seventh free, just four separated the sides.
But in stepped Paddy Richmond to deliver on his generous promise, picking up Martin Scullion's driven free kick to blast a rocket to the roof of the net in the 45th minute.

Even after McIntosh was withdrawn from the action 20 minutes from the end, there was little respite for New York, although they almost had a second goal when Kevin Kennedy flashed a shot just wide, having had an effort cleared off the line by McKeague in the first half.

New York went almost 20 minutes without scoring, before Bergin slotted over a neat point, scant reward for a sustained period of pressure, Antrim simply stepped on the gas once again, with Richmond and Michael Herron splitting the posts with some style.

And when Bonnie picked up a second yellow card three minutes from the end, New York's faint hopes had disappeared.
