Wexford GAA county board delegates are ready to back John Meyler as their new senior hurling manager on Thursday evening.

It's believed that the special committee, at was established to find a manager have settled on Meyler to lead the county’s hurlers into 2007.

Former Limerick star Pat Herbert was due to meet with the committee but they have been unable to tie down the Shannonsider who is heavily involved with Tipperary club side, Toomevara, as they prepare for the county senior hurling final.

Another former star, Kilkenny defender, Eddie O'Connor, impressed at the interview, but it seems that the committee have decided on Meyler, who now lives in Cork.

The former Wexford and Cork hurler won an All-Ireland senior hurling medal with the Rebel County as a substitute back in 1986. During his playing days in Cork he also assisted that city hurling club, St Finbarr's and also acted as a selector with the Cork senior hurling set-up. He also enjoyed a spell as manager of the Kerry senior hurlers.

Wexford were reluctant to go for a hurling manager outside of their county but see Meyler as a native son and ideally suited to the many challenges that he will face to bring them back as a hurling force, following dismal displays in All-Ireland quarter-finals over the past two years.

Once Meyler is ratified it's hoped to complete his backroom team over the coming weeks which will also have a strong Wexford pedigree about it.
