Former Clare hurling manager Ger Loughnane has ruled himself out of the running for the position of Galway hurling manager.
Loughnane was not prepared to run against Seán Silke and Joe Cooney, two of the other nominees for the position.
He told The Irish Daily Star newspaper: 'In my naivety, I thought that everyone else would withdraw from the contest and there would be a clear run for us. When that didn’t happen, I was starting to get concerned. No disrespect to Mattie Murphy, but I didn’t consider him to be a huge opponent.'
He added: 'But when I saw that two iconic figures of Galway hurling like Sean Silke and especially Joe Cooney wanted the job, I felt I should pull out
'They have given so much to the game in the county that they deserve a crack at it.'
