John Mullane breaks away from Cork's Diarmuid O'Sullivan

Waterford made it two wins from two outings, as, despite the fact they had to play for almost an hour with 14 men, they overcame a Cork side missing a number of their All-Ireland winning team by 0-25 to 2-15.

This Munster derby brought a crowd of over 8,000 to Páirc Uí Rinn and the visitors were very much up for the encounter, playing at a pace that was much closer to championship fare than Cork’s efforts.

But Waterford supreme Justin McCarthy will know that it is three months to Munster championship action and while he would have been happy with his side’s win, he knows many bigger days lie ahead.

Waterford, with Eoin Kelly and Paul Flynn deadly accurate from placed balls over the 70 minutes, led 0-13 to 1-7 at the break, even though Seamus Prendergast was dismissed for an incident with Diarmuid O'Sullivan after just 18 minutes.

Cork had scored a fine goal through Conor Cusack (a brother of goalkeeper Donal Òg) when he doubled on a pass from Kieran Murphy after six minutes to put his side three points in front.

The visitors, roared on by a big travelling support, scored two early second half points from in-form Flynn and corner-forward Conor Carey to stretch their lead and they never looked back.

With the lively John Mullane coming into the game in the second half, and substitute Dan Shanahan contributing three second half points from play, the game was well over as a contest when Cork scored their second goal through substitute Neil Ronan in stoppage time.
