Galway were beaten by Wexford in today's All-Ireland Intermediate hurling final in Portlaoise - the first of five All-Ireland hurling finals for the Tribesmen this month.

Wexford lifted their first Intermediate crown since 1964, leaving Galway to prepare for the minor, senior, under-21 and masters finals.

Paul Roche netted a fifth-minute penalty to help the Model men to a 1-10 to 0-8 half-time lead.

Seamus Murphy's side went seven points up before Kenneth Burke (0-3) stirred Galway back into it but Wexford doggedly held on as Stephen Doyle and sub Marty Kelly cracked over late scores.
