Camogie glory for Munster colleges

The Munster colleges team won the Colleges Interprovincial centenary Tournament beating Leinster 6-7 to 1-8 in the final in Naomh Mearnóg, Dublin yesterday.

Featuring players from Cork, Waterford, Tipperary, Limerick and Clare they defeated Connacht in the first match 3-12 to 4-6.

Munster got off to a dream start in the final with a goal from three times Cork All-Ireland minor winner Anna Geary after only fifty five seconds. Nine minutes later Limerick senior inter-county Sinéad Mc Aauliffe made it goal number two.

A further three goals before the break from Rena Buckley,Jacqui O'Keefe and Ciara Murphy spelt trouble for the Leinster girls who trailed 0-2 to Munster's 5-4 despite the best efforts of Kilkenny player Jacqui Frisby and Wexford's Ursula Jacob.

Leinster rallied well in the second half with a goal from Kilkenny's Áine Fahey but the mountain was too high for Leinster to climb in the second half. Some fine points from All-Ireland colleges champions Coláiste Bride captain Ursula Jacob did little to enhance the Leinster scoreline.

When Anna Geary made it goal number six with sixteen minutes remaining there was no doubt that the Centenary Colleges Tournament was heading to Munster.

Meanwhile Ulster overcame Connacht in an entertaining runner up match which Ulster won 3-6 to 1-7.
