Galway edged out a gallant Dublin side, who netted two goals through dual star Conal Keaney, by 1-14 to 2-06 as forward Eugene Cloonan hit an impressive tally of 1-06 in in their Allianz NHL 1A match at Parnell Park.
Dublin got off the mark with a seventh minute David Curtain free from 35 metres out. Cloonan hit two early wides, but netted on 16 minutes from a Damien Hayes pass for a 1-06 to 0-01 lead to the visitors.
Ballyboden's Keaney answered back on the cusp of half-time as his searing 35-metre free eluded Galway goalkeeper Liam Donoghue and found the visitors' net.
Six points down at the break, 1-02 to 1-08, Dublin improved with a Dave Sweeney point after the restart, with Galway's reply through two 30-metre Cloonan efforts. Keaney converted two more frees, allied to a placed ball from substitute Tommy Moore, before a 21-metre free on 63 minutes was hammered to the Galway net by the resurgent Keaney, who ended with 2-03.
With the score at 2-05 to 1-13, Galway did not panic and Cloonan's sixth point two minutes before full-time saw them take the spoils.
