Carroll succeeds Cregan as Limerick manager

Mossie Carroll has been installed as the new Limerick senior hurling coach following yesterday's dramatic resignation of Eamon Cregan. Carroll has been a selector for many years with the county and will step into Cregan's shoes with immediate effect having beaten double All-Ireland winning Under-21 manager Dave Keane to the post.

Earlier this morning it had appeared that Cregan would reverse his decision to resign as manager following a marathon meeting of the Limerick County Board last night. Cregan offered his resignation on Tuesday afternoon after losing patience with the county's decision to continue to allow dual players represent the county in both football and hurling.

Cregan was insistent that members of the hurling panel concentrate on that code, but after failing to get the backing of the County Board he took the dramatic decision to resign. However, Cregan turned up at last night's meeting, which ran for seven hours into the early hours of the morning, and offered some hope that he would reconsider his decision.

Cregan arrived at the meeting shortly before midnight in response to a sudden invitation to attend. He stayed for an hour, but on leaving the meeting just after 1.00am Cregan revealed he would make a final decision later today. Cregan offered the county's supperters hopes by admitting: "There is a desire to resolve the issue, but I have had a long day and it's too late to make a decision."

It now appears that the matter is out of Cregan's hands following the appointment of Carroll this morning.
