Cork dual player Séan Óg Ó hAilpín will miss his county's entire All-Ireland Championship campaign this season. Ó hAilpín was involved in a two-car collision on Thursday in Nenagh, County Tipperary and sustained injuries to his head and knee. Further tests have been carried out on the player and it has been revealed that he sustained the same knee injury that has affected Brazilian footballer Ronaldo in his playing career. This latest development rules Ó hAilpín out of both hurling and football for the rest of the year.
Cork selector Ted Owens admitted on RTÉ radio that although this is a major blow to Cork GAA, they are just relieved that the situation wasn't more serious. "It's bad news but Seán is lucky to be alive. He had a bad car crash and it could have been a lot worse so Seán is philosophical about it and no better lad to work hard and get back again," he said.
"The knee was badly swollen so he was transferred from Nenagh Hospital to Cork University Hospital under the care of Dr Con Murphy, our team doctor and he was operated on last night. However, he has done himself some serious damage. Basically the patellar tendon is gone which is a serious injury for any sportsman, but hopefully he will make a comeback," added Owens.
