Hurler of the Year DJ Carey has been named to play in the midfield position for Kilkenny’s opening game in the Allianz Hurling League campaign at Nowlan Park on Sunday. In the absence of the injured Andy Comerford and Brian McEvoy, Kilkenny manager Brian Cody has asked Carey and Canice Brennan to man the midfield positions.

Both Comerford and McEvoy are recovering from surgery. All-star midfielder Comerford had an operation on his groin, while McEvoy went under the knife to correct a shoulder ailment. The other absentees include Willie O’Connor, Denis Byrne and John Power.

The one newcomer on the team on the team is Tullaroan’s Jimmy Coogan, who wins a place following some fine displays in the Waterford Crystal South East League.
