GAA: Galway minors victorious in thrilling final

Galway clinched the All-Ireland minor hurling championship at Croke Park today, with a three point victory over Munster champions Cork. In a high scoring game, the Connacht champions just edged through by a score of 2-19 to 4-10.

The conquerors of Offaly in the semi-final were in excellent form today in a thrilling contest, and deserved their victory with some excellent scores. Galway had the edge in terms of experience as five players, Brian Mahony, Gerard Farragher, Kevin Brady, Damien Hayes and captain Richard Murray, were part of the side that brought them All-Ireland glory last year.

Cork made several changes from the team that struggled to beat Dublin in the semi-final, but couldn't find the consistency from long range to convert their many scoring chances, and Galway's superior score taking proved the difference between the two sides.

The teams were:

Cork: K Murphy; C O'Sullivan, J O'Brien, B Murphy; J O'Neill, P Tierney, G Calnan; M O'Connor, B Carey; G McLoughlin, C Brosnan, T O'Leary; S O hAlpin, E Collins, K Murphy

Galway: A Diviney; B Mahony, T Og Regan, N Corcoran; S Kavanagh, A Diviney, A Cullinane; G Farragher, B Coen; R Murray, P Garvey, K Brady; D Hayes, T Kavanagh, D Greene
